    Songwriter Bobby Gregory dies of cancer in Nashville. He wrote "Sunny Side Of The Mountain," which will be covered three months later by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band with Jimmy Martin for the album "Will The Circle Be Unbroken"

    Bluesman Junior Parker dies during surgery for a brain tumor in Chicago. A cousin of soul singer Al Green, he wrote and first recorded "Mystery Train," taken to wider acclaim by Elvis Presley

    R&B songwriter Raymond Jackson dies from burns suffered when he tried to kill a rat by dousing a hole in his yard with gasoline. Two of his songs become country hits: "(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want To Be Right" and "Touch A Hand, Make A Friend"

    Songwriter Rudolf Friml dies in Hollywood. He composed 20 Broadway musicals, including "Indian Love Call" and "Rose Marie." The title songs from both those projects were rejiggered as country hits by Slim Whitman during the 1950s

    Songwriter Andy Razaf dies of kidney failure at Riverside Hospital in North Hollywood, California. A frequent collaborator with Fats Waller, he co-wrote "Ain't Misbehavin'," which Hank Williams Jr. translates into a country hit in 1986

    Fiddler Joe "Big Red" Hayes dies from a heart ailment in the arms of Vassar Clements at the Free Trade Center in Manchester, New Hampshire, after a performance with Connie Smith. Hayes co-wrote the classic "A Satisfied Mind"

    Movie producer Arthur Freed dies of a heart attack in Los Angeles. Known for such films as "Annie Get Your Gun," "Gigi" and "Easter Parade," he also co-wrote "Temptation (Tim-Tayshun)," a 1947 country hit for Red Ingle & The Natural Seven
