    R&B singer Johnny Ace shoots himself backstage in a game of Russian roulette at the City Auditorium in Houston, Texas. Ace dies the next day. His hit "Pledging My Love" is covered as a country hit 30 years later by Emmylou Harris

    Jim Reeves and Abbott Records chief Fabor Robison tangle with a handgun in a Los Angeles recording studio, with Reeves ultimately demanding his release from the label. Nearly three weeks later, Abbott announces Reeves is leaving

    Alvin Krolik is shot and killed while trying to rob a liquor store in El Paso, Texas. His obituary will mention a line from an unpublished autobiography in which he described himself as "a man who walked a lonely street." Songwriters Tommy Durden and Mae Boren Axton turn that phrase into an Elvis Presley hit, "Heartbreak Hotel"

    A teenage Marine accuses Elvis Presley of pulling a gun on him in Memphis. Unknown to the soldier, the pistol is a movie prop. Three days later, Presley sends an apologetic six-page telegram, and the incident is brushed aside

    Ernest Tubb is arrested for carrying a pistol and for drunk and disorderly conduct after he fires a shot in the lobby at Nashville's WSM radio

    David Ragsdale is accidentally shot in the back at a San Mateo, California, bar. A year later, Ragsdale files a $500,000 suit against Ray Price, reasoning that if Price hadn't been singing, he wouldn't have been at the club

    Jimmie Osborne commits suicide with a .32-caliber pistol following a spat with his wife at his trailer home in Louisville, Kentucky. The singer/songwriter had three hits, the biggest coming with a topical single, "The Death Of Little Kathy Fiscus"

    "Maybellene" songwriter Chuck Berry is arrested in St. Charles, Missouri, on a federal charge of transporting a firearm on the interstate. The charges are later dropped

    Gram Parsons' father, Cecil "Coon Dog" Connor, commits suicide with a .38 caliber pistol at his home in Waycross, Georgia

    Acclaimed author Ernest Hemingway dies of a self-inflicted gun shot at his home in Ketchum, Idaho. He's namechecked 44 years later in the Brad Paisley hit "Alcohol" and again in Keith Urban's 2015 single "John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16"
