Carl Radle, the former bass player for Derek & The Dominos, dies of a kidney ailment at his home in Tulsa. Radle had appeared two years earlier on Eric Clapton's minor country hit "Lay Down Sally"

Bass vocalist Culley Holt, of The Jordanaires, dies in Missouri. Holt helped found the quartet in 1948, although he left before the group hit its stride, and was not in the lineup that eventually found its way into the Country Music Hall of Fame

Guitarist Burt Hutcherson dies from pneumonia in Nashville. He was a member of The Gully Jumpers, a stringband that worked the Grand Ole Opry from 1927 until the 1970s, and became the first act contracted by Victor Records to hold a recording session in Nashville

Former Grateful Dead keyboard player Keith Godchaux dies in an automobile accident in Marin County, California. The Dead will be referenced in Lonestar's 1996 country hit "No News"

Electric guitarist Jimmy Bryant dies of lung cancer in Moultrie, Georgia. Teamed with steel player Speedy West, they were jointly known as the Flaming Guitars for their lightning-quick facility. Bryant also wrote the Waylon Jennings hit "Only Daddy That'll Walk The Line"

Guitarist Oscar Moore dies in Las Vegas, Nevada. As a member of The King Cole Trio, he played on "Straighten Up And Fly Right" and "I Can't See For Lookin'," two songs that appeared in 1944 on an early version of the Billboard country chart

Guitarist Bob Morris dies of cancer in Harrison, Arkansas. A former member of Buck Owens' Buckaroos, he wrote Owens' hits "Buckaroo" and "Made In Japan," as well as Sylvia's "The Matador"

Booking agent Grover "Shorty" Lavender dies. He worked with such acts as The Statler Brothers, George Jones and Tammy Wynette, but only after playing fiddle on hits by Marty Robbins and Ray Price, including "Heartaches By The Number"
